I am excited to announce my candidacy for the council member position in our community. High Bridge is a place we all call home. As such, it deserves governance that aligns with the principles of transparency, responsibility, and fiscal prudence. Many of you may remember me as a council member. I also served as mayor for 13 years. Our number one goal then was to keep taxes low.
It is with this experience that I wish to serve to your benefit. My number one focus is lowering property taxes. One of the key motivations behind my decision to run for Council is my observation that our current budgeting practices no longer adhere to the guidelines set forth by the borough form of government. In High Bridge, the budget needs to be prepared by the Council rather than at the mayor's direction. This deviation significantly impacts the financial burden each of us bears regarding property taxes.

If elected, I am committed to ensuring that our budgeting processes will be done in a manner that is not only legally compliant but also transparent and accountable to the residents of High Bridge. I will work tirelessly to foster an environment where every taxpayer's dollar is spent wisely and with the utmost consideration for the long-term prosperity of our town. I firmly believe that by adhering to good governance and fiscal responsibility principles, we can create a High Bridge that thrives while remaining affordable and accessible to all who call it home. Another critical issue I aim to address as a council member is the marginalization of our volunteers, which has unfortunately been the trend in recent years. I have been a High Bridge Historical Committee member for two years. Our mayor has summarily removed volunteers she disagrees with for many unrelated reasons. Their names are tossed into a pile of other items called a consent agenda at council meetings, which the council votes on with one vote and no specifics. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community, serving as the cornerstone of many of our initiatives and programs. Read More About Volunteers...

As your representative, I will fight tirelessly to ensure that volunteers are recognized for their invaluable contributions and provided with the support and resources they need to thrive. Whether organizing community events, maintaining our parks, or supporting local charities, volunteers play a vital role in shaping the fabric of High Bridge and saving us money.

Finally, the golf course paid off its debt last year, and the Borough should have used a significant dollar amount for tax relief. It was not, and no one in Borough Hall could explain where those dollars went. Read more about the Golf Course...
I will speak up and will not be silent. I have run significant companies and am fearless in making changes. I respectfully ask for your vote on June 4, 2024.

Sincerely,
Al Schweikert
